When aliens misinterpret video feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war against them, they attack the Earth using games like PAC-MAN, Donkey Kong, Galaga, Centipede and Space Invaders as models for their various assaults. President Will Cooper has to call on his childhood best friend, '80s video game champion Sam Brenner, to lead a team of old-school arcaders to defeat aliens and save the planet.
Three world record video gamers - Sam Brenner (<a href=">Adam Sandler) the &quot;Pac-Man&quot; champ, Ludlow Lamonsoff (<a href=">Josh Gad) the &quot;Centipede&quot; champ, and Eddie Plant (<a href=">Peter Dinklage) the &quot;Donkey Kong&quot; champ - combine forces to stop an extraterrestrial life force who took a message the wrong way when we broadcasted video game tournaments which extended to the far reaches of outer space.
This script must have been written by a 12 year old. Its every kid&#39;s fantasy come to life. The world is under attack of aliens and president Kevin James calls his best friend Adam Sandler. It turns out Adam is the hero video games always said he was and spending all that money at the arcades prepared him to be that hero. Meanwhile Josh Gad gets to yell at a bunch of soldiers who would just knock him out in real life, gets with a video game character and has Q-Bert kids with her. Its pure wish fulfillment.<br/><br/>Adam Sandler shows that he can be funny when he wants to be and this is probably the best he&#39;s been in a long time. Josh Gad is great to watch for the reasons I mentioned above but Peter Dinklage is the best thing about it. They have also decent performances from Brian &quot;Lets Blow Up Google&quot; Cox and Sean &quot;If I say Its A Beer Commercial, Its A Bloody Beer Commercial&quot; Bean.<br/><br/>The concept and effects were amazing, they have real life versions of Centipede, Tetris, Pac Man and Donkey Kong. They pay a lot of attention to detail, they not only get the mini-cooper ghosts the right colour (which would have been enough for me) but also use the right names on the license plates.<br/><br/>There are some plot holes, it makes no sense Eddie Plant would have been able to get away with using a cheat code under the eye of thousands of people at a tournament, the movie does not even try to explain how an arcade game cheat code could be used in a real life car, Pac Man does not have cheat codes and it makes no sense for there to be cheat codes for the ghosts when Pac Man is normally the player character.<br/><br/>I also think Lady Lisa should have been introduced before the finale (maybe she could have been the reward for defeating Pac Man) as there is not much development for her (I don&#39;t think she even had any lines) or her relationship with Ludlow and the subplot is sorta just scrammed into the last few minutes. However I would not go as far as calling Ludlow&#39;s obsession creepy, its probably just SJWs trying to find something wrong where there isn&#39;t. Its also a shame the dog from Duck Hunt didn&#39;t get shot (which people must been wanting for the past thirty years).<br/><br/>The credits were cool, showing arcade games of the movie&#39;s events.<br/><br/>In all, the movie is a fun ride.
For a movie that seems to be intended mostly for kids, it really has some entertainment. Although I fear that the intended audience won&#39;t understand the fun of all the Arcade stuff…<br/><br/>So, given the fact that the main ingredient of the movie will only fully appeal those who actually played those games back in the 80&#39;s, I also have to review this from my point of view (yep, I&#39;ve played several of those games, back then).<br/><br/>The setting, story-telling and acting is really not to my taste. It&#39;s kind of weird, all together. But.. that said: the recognizing of all those Arcane heroes, the way they are part of the movie, the fun quotes the characters have here and there and the chase to get rid all the Arcane stuff, it&#39;s actually pretty fun to watch.<br/><br/>No, I don&#39;t think I&#39;ll see it ever again. But after the first 15 minutes of pretty bland movie-time, it somehow catches enough to not only see it through the end, but I even felt like I had a good time. <br/><br/>I can imagine that kids can have a lot of fun watching this movie and it&#39;ll probably be a really nice family-movie.
Sporting a flowing mullet and aviator shades, Dinklage perks things up considerably as the story’s comically arrogant bad-boy-turned-good-guy.
